Scripture classes in Cammeray Public and North Sydney Demonstration School in 2012

Immediate help needed on a Wednesday (Kinder, Year 1, year 5) or Thursday morning (Kinder, year 3)

The Parish is blessed to have a strong Catechist team which is based on a 'buddy' system engaging two teachers for each class.

Would you be interested to join this dynamic team of parishioners in a very rewarding ministry?

In 2012 not only have Catholic scripture enrolments increased but some of our valued catechists are unable to continue teaching. We are seeking volunteers for both public schools served by the parish to come on board immediately.

Formation and ongoing support for catechists

The Parish Public school catechists meet twice a term for admin, prayer, troubleshooting and coffee. We have reflection mornings at the presbytery and MacKillop Place, in addition to other forms of in-service training and formation. The Sydney Archdiocesan Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) also provides training and support for catechists. It produces texts and resources for catechists to use in the classroom.

Goals:
  • strengthen catechist formation
  • connect more with student families
  • develop parish/class/family communication
  • 2 catechists per class in all primary school classes
(2/3 staffed by 2 teachers at present)
  • develop inter-faith and ecumenical relationships with our counterparts from other Christian denominations and faiths

mackillopPublic School Scripture Class Excursion to St Mary Mackillop Chapel and Museum

The Parish arranged a special tour this week for the Year 5 Catholic Scripture Class at the North Sydney DEM School to mark the year-end.

Fifteen children were warmly received by the Sisters of St Joseph and given privileged treatment in what was something of a pilot project for Special Religious Education in the public schools being served by our Parish.

The children responded eagerly to the experience and described as 'favourite' the opportunity to kneel around the tomb of St Mary, reading together the inscriptions on the tomb while being introduced to the history of her life.

Catechists at the Parishes of Our Lady of the Way - Report Oct 2011:

It is an inspiration to work with the catechist volunteers in this vital ministry in our Parishes.

Recently catechists at North Sydney Girls High have accompanied and prepared students who have wanted to be received into the church.  They have worked with great sensitivity to respond to the girls and their families and link them into the community of the 6pm Sunday night Youth Mass.  As part of this process, Fr Daven has attended classes and led the students in a service of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  There has been deep listening and great respect for the students, and a creative response on the part of the catechists, with the generous, flexible support of Fr Daven.
