The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is an extension of Jesus' healing of the sick and is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness. This sacrament is given to those who face serious illness of any kind: physical, mental, psychological, etc. It may be received by anyone who anticipates major surgery or who has reached an advanced age.
Apart from the administration of the Sacrament to individuals as required, our Parishes celebrate this sacrament on a monthly basis at Anointing Masses in five different locations.

REPORT

by Trish Martin

What an amazing turnout on Wednesday 26 May at the Anointing Mass in the Marist Brothers Chapel!!

healing_mass_5Given the heavy rain we expected our numbers to be seriously diminished.  Not so!!  About 35 seniors braved the inclement weather and  joined Fr Smith and parish staff for a very happy celebration.
Students from St Mary's School attended as usual and delivered the Readings and Prayers of the Faithful.  They also distributed  the sandwiches and cakes  - a high point of the morning!   Their presence is a great blessing to us all.  We were also delighted to see Elvira and the Georgian House residents arrive in their bus to join us.

Everyone who attends these Masses on the last Wednesday of the month comments on the warmth and joy of the occasion.  Father Smith  certainly makes us all feel very much at home and the Mass and Anointing are truly uplifting experiences.
