Fifty Years a Jesuit priest
Fr Bob Walsh SJ
On 3rd January 2012 we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Ordination of Fr. Bob Walsh SJ.
The Star of the Sea Church was full of well-wishers.
The Mass was concelebrated by two fellow novices, Frs Wilcken and Day and also Fr. Hosking, superior of Fr. Bob and Fr. Smith.
Fr. Bob spoke movingly of his priestly days and ended by introducing us to "the puppet".
After Mass there was a morning tea and an opportunity to greet the "evergreen" ordinand.
60th Anniversary of the Priesthood
Fr. Tom O'Donovan SJ
An event which has passed us by with little acknowledgment has been the 60th Anniversary of Priesthood of Fr. Tom O'Donovan SJ. There are very few in the parish who are not aware of the great contribution of this man.
For years he single handedly said the early morning Mass at St. Mary's. His meticulously wrought sermons became the stuff of two books compiled with the assistance of his friends. All the time he was simultaneously holding down the position of Mission Director.
His family ask that we might remember him in prayer. Those who wish might convey their gratitude by card.
First Vows in the Jesuits - OLOW parishioner
Eka Tanaya
On Thursday, 2nd February Eka Tanaya, parishioner of OLOW will take his first vows in the Society of Jesus at Emerton. Please pray for him especially at this time.
Fr Tony asked Eka if he would write a brief synopsis including his time in the parish:
I first went to St. Mary’s North Sydney in 2006. I immediately felt at home there thanks to the familiar inscription in the sanctuary I used to have as a school motto. I became a regular parishioner and a part-time volunteer at different charity organisations introduced through the church.
After much discernment, I became a Jesuit novice in February 2010. Religious life with all its tensions was difficult for me. Slowly, I discovered that praying and relying on God alone really helped – in ways which I am still unable to completely comprehend and succinctly describe.
The Ignatian 30-day silent retreat shaped me significantly. I felt liberated through the embrace of the unconditionally loving and eternally patient God. I freely responded to the call of Jesus to serve and struggle with him, to be a contemplative in action.
Living a community life, teaching catechism at state-schools, working at a nursing home in Melbourne, teaching at St. Aloysius’ College and living in East Timor have taught me invaluable things: humility, poverty (actual and spiritual), God’s presence in all things and the integration between faith and justice.
My two years in the novitiate is coming to its end. Responding to God’s abundant love and invitation to service, I would offer my whole self back to bear Jesus’ name in his Society in giving greater glory to God – AD MAIOREM DEI GLORIAM.
For this, I humbly and gratefully ask for your blessings and prayers.
